Kirk Herbstreit shares two-word reaction after son lands college football job but fans say same thing

Broadcasting is in the Herbstreit blood.

For three decades, Kirk Herbstreit has served as a college football analyst for ESPN, and is one of the most recognisable faces in the sport.

He travels the country with the College GameDay crew to cover the biggest game of any given week, and it seems his love for broadcasting has rubbed off on his family.

Now, Kirk’s son is following in his footsteps.

Ahead of the 2025 season, Zak Herbstreit has landed a job with On3 as a national college football analyst and podcast host.

His primary project will be a YouTube show titled Off Script with Zak Herbstreit, which will boast ‘in-depth conversations with players, coaches, and prominent voices’ as well as ‘unique breakdowns’ of the biggest news in college football.

The first episode, featuring a conversation with Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Julian Sayin, released on Monday.

It’s fair to say dad Kirk is rather proud of his son, and shared a heartwarming message on social media as he reacted to the news.

He wrote on X: “Congratulations on this opportunity Zak!

“Can’t wait to see you work hard and grow in this space!

He then followed up with: “Go gettem!!”

While Kirk was quick to congratulate Zak on the new role, some football fans took to social media to question if he was benefiting from his father’s prominent industry role.

“Herbstreit? Never heard that name in college football before,” one joked.

“Gotta love when a national writer hasn’t tweeted since 2022. I wonder how Zak HERBSTREIT landed this job?” another questioned.

“Most national college football analysts are hired after not tweeting for a year and having no experience in the media industry. Nothing to see here. Move along,” a third wrote, sarcastically.

“Zak Herbstreit becomes the Bronny James of college football media,” a fourth joked.

Plenty of other fans, though, wished Zak well as he makes the move into sports broadcasting.

    “Let’s Go Zak!!” one responded.

“This is a huge opportunity,” another said.

“Earned, not given,” a third wrote.

Did Zak Herbstreit play college football?

Herbstreit is no stranger to the world of NCAA, having been a walk-on tight end at Ohio State before he was forced to medically retire due to a heart condition.

He remained a student coach through the 2024 season, and was part of the 2024 National Championship team.

“Zak has tremendous natural talent and has grown up immersed in college sports,” On3 Founder and CEO Shannon Terry said, announcing his new role.

“His ability to connect with today’s college stars will bring a fresh and authentic perspective to the On3 network.

“He’ll be traveling each week to the biggest games across the country, giving fans a behind-the-scenes look at everything that makes Saturdays the greatest day in sports.”

Zak himself added: “I’m grateful for the path that led me here, and I’m excited to bring real passion, insight, and a player’s mindset to the content that On3 creates.”
