Fresh off an encouraging 134-118 win against the New Orleans Pelicans on New Year’s Eve, the shorthanded Chicago Bulls could return to a .500 record with the first game of a back-to-back home slate, a clash against the 19-15 Orlando Magic.
The Magic sit 2.5 games ahead of the 16-17 Bulls as the Eastern Conference’s sixth seed.
Chicago has been without all three of Josh Giddey (hamstring strain), Coby White (right calf tightness) and Zach Collins (toe injury) since halfway through an eventual 136-101 obliteration by the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday. But Tre Jones, Isaac Okoro and Jalen Smith all stepped up in a big way on Wednesday. The Bulls will need to lean on their depth as long as their starting backcourt sits.
We’ve got updates on White and Giddey, the Chicago role players’ thoughts on their Pelicans win, and a possible blockbuster trade in today’s Bulls Bullets.
Peter Creveling-Imagn Images While this thoroughly mediocre Chicago club should probably be building towards the future, its front office is apparently considering offloading actual assets to acquire another non-All-Star in a trade (although, in fairness, it’s possible he makes it this year in the depleted East). Per Jake Fischer of The Stein Line, the Bulls are apparently in the trade mix to acquire sharpshooting Brooklyn Nets forward Michael Porter Jr., along with the Milwaukee Bucks, Detroit Pistons and Golden State Warriors. In my estimation, that feels like the wrong impulse. As by far the best player on the 10-21 Nets, Porter has been empowered to be the hub of Brooklyn’s offense. The 6-foot-10 forward has been averaging career highs of 25.8 points on .496/.410/.812 shooting splits, 7.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists a night. But Porter is owed $38.3 million this season and $40.8 million, hefty sums for a 27-year-old who has publicly declared he’s taking his career “a year at a time” amid lingering back issues. Tre Jones submitted possibly the game of his life on New Year’s Eve, scoring 20 points on 7-of-7 field goal shooting and 5-of-6 free throw shooting, dishing out 12 assists against one turnover, and notching a +16 plus-minus. His passing helped spark a brilliant fast-breaking display from small forward Isaac Okoro, who scored 24 points — mostly on drives and catch-and-shoot triples — and logged a team-best +31. “Just trying to make sure our group was ready from the start,” Jones said of Chicago’s fast break attack, per Sam Smith of Bulls.com. “With guys down we wanted to jump on them early and get off to a good start. Didn’t want to dig ourselves a hole like we’ve been doing. So tried to come out early and go from there.” Patrick Gorski-Imagn Images In accordance with Billy Donovan‘s wishes, the Bulls got out in transition early and often against the defenseless Pelicans. Chicago ultimately enjoyed a 25-15 fastbreak scoring edge. “That’s our identity,” Okoro affirmed, per Smith. “We want to play fast and in transition, and from day one that was the goal. We know with Zion and their bigs they didn’t want to get back. So we wanted to run them and get easy points off that.” Giddey is set to be reassessed in two weeks. Chicago is set to play eight games across the next 13 days — and it could be without its star point guard for potentially all of them. K.C. Jones of Chicago Sports Network reports that the 6-foot-7 pro has been shooting and weight lifting, but has yet to run. Giddey claims the hamstring issue represents his first-ever soft tissue injury in the NBA. White spoke with reporters this morning at a team shootaround. Per Will Gottlieb of CHGO Bulls, imaging on the calf indicated that he did not suffer a re-strain. That said, according to comments captured by the Chicago Sun-Times’ Joe Cowley, the 6-foot-4 UNC product did reveal that Bulls medical staffers will keep tabs on his calf for the duration of the 2025-26 season now.Coby White and his calf issues will be monitored for the rest of the season now. — Joe Cowley (@JCowleyHoops) January 2, 2026 “I’ll probably get monitored the rest of the year now, but it is what it is,” White said. “For me, it’s going to probably be annoying at times, and frustrating, but I’d rather it be that way than miss significant time.”MORE BULLS FROM BLEACHER NATION: Go Ad Free | Subscribe to the BN Newsletter
