Pete Crow-Armstrong and Alex Bregman Are Doing Some Impressive (and Impressively Similar) Things

When the Chicago Cubs signed Alex Bregman this past offseason, there was obviously a lot of chatter about how much value he can provide an organization off the field, including with young player development. And while I don’t want to overstate things or take away from the extensive work Pete Crow-Armstrong has done for himself, it’s hard not to see at least some relationship between Bregman’s arrival, the explicit connection between the two we saw written about repeatedly in the spring, and PCA’s explosion at the plate this season.

Indeed, MLB Network saw an additional connection there that my eyes had definitely not seen:

At first, I thought that was some significant exaggeration, perhaps designed to get some eyeballs. But then I actually watched the clips, and whoa. I was blown away by the similarities at various points in the two guys’ swings. Some quick screenshots from the video, where they reversed PCA’s video to get a one-to-one comparison:

The finish on the swings is obviously different, but from the load to the moment through contact, there’s just so much similarity in the base, the hands, the hips, the bat path, and the point of contact. Maybe Bregman had something to do with that for PCA, maybe he didn’t. But yeah, it is certainly noticeable when you put it like that.

All of this is particularly fun when set against the context of the monster month these two guys had – the literal top two months by WAR in all of baseball (2.5 for PCA, 1.8 for Bregman). On the month, PCA hit 14 homers and Bregman hit 12. Not only are those the top two marks in baseball, but also: no one else hit more than 9.
