Franklin College in Franklin, Indiana has named Olympian Jennifer Brinegar as the program’s new head coach.
She is just the third head coach in program’s history since launching in fall 2009, and replaces alumnus Zach Rayce. Rayce left to become the aquatics director and head coach at nearby Indiana Creek High School.
“Jennifer Brinegar is one of the most accomplished names in the history of Indiana swimming, and we are thrilled to welcome her to Franklin College,” Griz athletic director Lance Marshall said. “Her championship pedigree, years of coaching success and her deep roots in this state’s swimming community make her the ideal person to lead our program into its next chapter. Our student-athletes are going to learn from someone who has competed and coached at the highest level, and that’s a tremendous opportunity for Griz athletics.”
Brinegar, then Jennifer Hooker, represented the United States at the 1976 Summer Olympics when she was only 15 years old. After those Games, she moved to train with Mark Schubert and the Mission Viejo Nadadores, and qualified to swim the heats of the 400 free relay at the 1978 World Championships.
A native of Bloomington, Indiana, she returned home and raced collegiately at Indiana University, where she won seven Big Ten titles and national championships in the 500 and 1650 yard freestyles.
Her son Michael Brinegar also swam at Indiana and qualified for Team USA at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
After working in non-athletics careers and athletics administration, she turned to coaching in 2010 with the Donner Swim Club in Columbus, Indiana. In 2015, she was named the Indiana Swimming Developmental Coach of hte Year.
She was named a Top 50 U.S. Age Group Coach in 2023 nationally by ASCA, and then founded her own team Club Olympia Swim Team.
In February of this year, she was hired as an age group coach for the Franklin Regional Swim Team, one of the top clubs in Indiana.
Franklin College is an NCAA Division III School that competes in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. The women’s team won the conference title in runaway fashion, while the men’s team finished 2nd behind Rose-Hulman. For the women, that marked a 9th-consecutive conference title.
The women’s team sent junior Celeste Hollis to the NCAA Division III Championships, where her best finish was 18th in the 100 fly (55.56). Fellow junior Katerina Lundy also qualified, finishing 29th in the 100 back (56.54).
Franklin College is the official host of the NCAA Division III Championships when they are held at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis.
Prior to Rayce’s tenure, Andrew Hendricks was the program’s founding head coach. He is now the college’s vice president for enrollment and marketing.
The school begins its 2026-2027 season with an intrasquad meet on October 10, with their first official competition being the Indiana DIII Championships on October 17.
