2025 World Championships
July 27 – August 3, 2025 (pool swimming) Singapore, Singapore World Aquatics Championships Arena LCM (50m) Meet Central How To Watch SwimSwam Preview Index Entry Book Live Results Live Recaps Prelims: Day 1 Finals: Day 1Oi galera e sejam bem-vindos to all South American swim fans! The first day of the World Championships has concluded, and it was a mixed bag for the continent’s biggest stars.
Gui Caribe continued a phenomenal post-Olympic season by establishing a new 22.91 lifetime best in the 50 fly semifinal. He snuck into the final tied for 7th and will go for the podium from an outside lane tomorrow. Caribe keeps alive a strong tradition of Brazilian presence in the men’s 50s.
Brazil’s other Guillerme star, Guilherme Costa, didn’t have the same fortune. Costa placed 22nd in the men’s 400 freestyle prelims, an event in which he holds the Americas record in. His time was 3:48.94, three and a half seconds slower than the 3:45.35 season best he delivered at Brazilian nationals in the spring. Further, it sits six seconds away from his 3:42.75 lifetime best from the Paris Olympics.
According to Brazilian sports blog Os Olimpicos, Costa said post-race that he wasn’t sure what happened. The Cachorrão had a spectacular last quad, improving each year in this event down to the Americas record in Paris. While peaks and plateaus are inevitable, the magnitude of Costa’s add was not expected.
South America’s biggest female middle distance star, Maria Fernanda Costa, also missed the 400 freestyle final, but only by one place. Costa turned in a 4:07.32 to place 9th and miss the final by less than a second. That being said, the time represents a four second add from the 4:03.47 time she posted at last year’s prelims in Paris to make it back 7th. With several top swimmers missing and a DQ this year, Costa’s 4:06.30 season best would have finaled.
Both Costa swimmers have opportunities to improve throughout the rest of the meet as they adjust to Singapore. They will both swim the 200 free, and Guilherme is also entered in the 800 free. Maria Fernanda will take part in Brazil’s 800 free relay, and they have a strong chance of finaling.
Other South America News
Though Costa was off his best, Brazil’s Stephan Stevernik was within a half second of his 400 free best time, touching in 3:47.91 today. Argentine Ulises Cazau was on national record watch in the men’s 50 fly after hitting 23.60 to get within .03 of the 23.57 mark in May. Today, he clocked a 23.88.There were no South American medalists or national records on day 1 (let me know if I inadvertently missed one).
