Three Chicago suburbs will lose their local Mariano’s grocery stores next month as part of a “larger-company wide decision” by Kroger.
The stores, at 450 Half Day Rd. in Buffalo Grove, 244 S. Gary Ave. in Bloomingdale and 2323 Capital Dr. in Northbrook, are all set to close their doors by the end of August, a Kroger spokesperson told NBC Chicago last month. The Buffalo Grove location will close Aug. 8, the Bloomingdale location location will close Aug. 15 and the Glenview West/Northbrook location will close Aug. 22.
Earlier this summer, the Mariano’s grocery store in Northfield, at 1822 Willow Rd., closed abruptly and months ahead of schedule.
According to the spokesperson, the closures were a ‘difficult decision,’ and are intended to help the company “run more efficiently and ensure the long-term health” of the business.
Nationwide, as many as 60 Mariano’s stores will shutter of the next 18 months, Kroger has said. In a June earnings call, Kroger, which also owns King Soopers, QFC, Fred Meyer and Harris Teeter, said the store closures were necessary because of “$100 million impairment charge.”
“As a result of these store closures, Kroger expects a modest financial benefit,” a release announcing its first quarter earnings said. The release went on to say the grocery giant is “is committed to reinvesting these savings back into the customer experience.” Impacted employees will be offered roles at other Kroger stores, the release went on to say.
Last year, a judge blocked a $24.6 billion merger between Kroger and grocery giant Albertsons, which owns Jewel-Osco. As part of the now-failed merger, the companies had arranged to sell off stores to try and save the deal.
Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul was one of numerous AG’s across the country who signed onto a bipartisan lawsuit against the merger, saying that the deal would have “greatly reduced competition in the grocery market.”
