President Trump called on the Washington Commanders to return to their original name and warned that he would oppose efforts to secure a new stadium in Washington, D.C., if the team refused.
The franchise retired the “Redskins” name in 2020 following pressure from sponsors and advocacy by Native American groups, who said the name and imagery promoted harmful racial stereotypes.
“The Washington ‘Whatever’s’ should IMMEDIATELY change their name back to the Washington Redskins Football Team, in his posts, Mr. Trump also stated on the Cleveland Guardians baseball team—formerly known as the Cleveland Indians until their 2021 name change—to revert to their old name.
In another post, Mr. Trump threatened to impose “a restriction” on the Commanders by thwarting the deal announced in April for the team to build a new stadium in Washington.
“I won’t make a deal for them to build a stadium in Washington,” Mr. Trump stated.
The posts followed Mr. Trump’s effort to shift attention away from the criticism surrounding his administration’s reversal on its pledge to release government records related to Jeffrey Epstein, the disgraced financier and convicted sex offender with whom Trump had associated for nearly 15 years.
Mr. Trump attacked Matt Dolan, a former state legislator who has a partial stake in the team, writing that he had lost elections “because of that ridiculous name change.”
Trump wrote, "Matt Dolan, the politically active owner of Cleveland's baseball team, has lost three consecutive elections due to the foolish name change. What he fails to realize is that switching back to the Cleveland Indians could actually help him win. Native Americans were being treated very unfairly. MAKE INDIANS GREAT AGAIN."
To sum up, Chris Antonetti, the Cleveland Guardians’ president, stated that the Athletic that the club was focused on its future.“Not something I’m tracking or paying a lot of attention to, however I would say generally, I understand there are very different perspectives on the decision we made a few years ago,” Mr. Antonetti said in response to the president’s post, according to The Athletic. “Though it’s a decision we made and we’ve gotten the opportunity to build the brand as the Guardians over the last four years and we’re excited about the future that’s in front of us.”
