The recent floods in Kerr County, Texas, following the Fourth of July celebrations, have brought significant devastation, with initial reports indicating 97 individuals were missing. However, local officials have announced a remarkable reduction in this figure to just three persons . The number of missing victims of the massive floods through Kerr County has precipitously diminished.
The Kerr County Flood Disaster Joint Information Center confirmed in a statement on Saturday that three individuals remain unaccounted for after the deadly floods of July 4.
At various points in recent days, reports estimated that there were 160 missing. Later reports said over 100 were missing.
This drop to three missing people, was explained in a statement by Kerrville City Manager Dalton Rice.
“We are profoundly grateful to the more than 1,000 local, state, and federal authorities who have worked tirelessly in the wake of the devastating flood that struck our community,” said Rice. “Thanks to their extraordinary efforts, the number of individuals previously listed as missing has dropped from over 160 to three.”
A wall of water descended on communities along the Guadalupe River before sunrise on July 4, and, in the resulting panic and turmoil, local officials urged people to report those believed to be missing to a telephone hotline and an email address. That figure quickly soared into the hundreds.
Many had indeed been carried away by the surge of water, and the death toll climbed considerably in the following days. The missing also included people whose status was wrongly characterized in the turbulent aftermath. The situation was further complicated by the number of people who were visiting the area, which is popular with tourists, for the holiday weekend; their relatives and friends were reaching out to officials from afar.
Despite this positive development regarding the missing persons count, the tragedy is underscored by a rising death toll; at least 107 individuals lost their lives due to the flooding. The floods not only caused loss of life but also inflicted severe damage across multiple counties in Hill Country. As recovery efforts continue, officials emphasize the importance of thorough searches and ongoing community support for those affected by this natural disaster.
