Opening day of the 2025 Weld County Fair goes to the dogs

Saturday morning marked the opening of the 2025 Weld County Fair at Island Grove Park in Greeley, and man’s best friend was on hand to kick things off.

At 9 a.m. in the exhibition building at the park, Weld County 4-H members listened to Emily Bink, the superintendent of the Weld County 4-H Dog Show, as she gave a rundown of the show.

Bink, who has overseen the show for seven years, said there were about 30 people who competed in the show. The participants, mostly teens and children, could compete in one or all three events at the show: showmanship, rally and obedience. The top placers in each category moved on to the State Fair competition next month in Pueblo.

Each participant, once they signed up for 4-H, picked a project to sign up for. The 30 who signed up for the dog project have been practicing every Wednesday night since the end of January for nearly three hours. They practiced for each event, and then selected which event fits them best come competition time.

Carson Tranello, a Keenesburg resident, was with his pitbull Axel as they readied to compete in the showmanship and rally events. The duo was excited for showtime and ready to prove Axel doubters wrong.

“(I’m looking forward to) proving everybody wrong because everyone was saying he couldn’t do it,” Tranello said. “He’s very stubborn.”

Tranello said it’s taken all these months of practicing getting Axel to listen and follow commands to get ready for Saturday’s show.

“He’s really improved since the beginning,” Tranello said.

Lucia Gomez and Hazel Michel, both 9-year-old 4-H members, also prepared for the show Saturday morning. Lucia competed in the novice rally with her Colorado Mountain Dog, Badger.

“Well, he kinda needed a little bit of training, and I wanted him to listen to me more,” Lucia said. “I wanted our bond to grow.”

Hazel and Pippin, her Spaniel mix, competed in all three events. Hazel just wanted to try the dog show after seeing her sister compete in it. She said she was a little nervous but excited to compete. In the end, Hazel most valued all the quality time she and Pippin spent together while preparing for the show.

In overseeing the show, Bink finds the greatest reward seeing competitors such as Hazel, Lucia and Tranello compete and improve with their dogs.

“I like to see the kids who are doing their homework, that come in here and … maybe their dog wouldn’t go down at all,” Bink said. “It literally would not lie down to save its life. And now, they can heel. They can ask them to lie down, the dog lies down, big smile from the kid. You honestly can’t beat that.”
