The NFL Top 100 poll is always a source of contentious debate as teams around the league begin to prepare to go into training camp ahead of the 2025 season.
Rarely do we see players fall so far down in the rankings in just one year, but for Christian McCaffrey, that is exactly what has happened.
The San Francisco 49ers running back was ranked as No. 73 on the list announced by the NFL, some 70 places below his 2024 ranking.
Although McCaffrey didn’t directly address his ranking, the timing of him reposting a social media post from the 49ers on his Instagram story was particularly interesting.
The reposted video showed a collection of images and clips of the 29-year-old’s highlight plays from his last few seasons with San Francisco that depict him in his best light as an explosive back who has the speed, strength and hurdling ability to evade the defense to get huge yards and score touchdowns.
This, as expected, sparked a lot of fan reaction under the post captioned by the 49ers with ‘In his own League’, with one fan writing: “Miss him being on the field. Comeback gotta be crazy.”
“The man barely played and ended up higher than non-injured players. I’m calling comeback player of the year [award], and if you were smart you would steal him early in fantasy…” another fan wrote.
“I believe CMC is going to unleash hell this season and I’m here all day for it,” a third fan added.
“You already know he’s taking this personal,” a fourth fan said.
A fifth fan had just four words to write: “Return of the Mac.”
When ranking CMC No. 73 in the Top 100 poll, the league wrote its justification under McCaffrey’s ranking, stating: “McCaffrey’s 2024 campaign was riddled with injuries, but he appears on the Top 100 for the third consecutive year.
“He began the season dealing with Achilles and calf injuries before making his season debut in Week 10. McCaffrey returned to his RB1 role, but he suffered a season-ending PCL injury in Week 13.

Although he played just four games in the 2024 campaign, McCaffrey showed his ability in every single one of those, rushing for 202 yards on 50 attempts, and tallied an additional 146 yards receiving from just 15 receptions.
This saw him make NFL history as the only player to have 200-plus rushing yards and 140-plus receiving yards in that span.
Although durability has been a concern over the past few seasons, when healthy and firing, McCaffrey is a gamechanger and is virtually impossible to stop.
Entering the 2023 campaign, McCaffrey was rated 35th on the Top 100 Poll, but he vastly outperformed that ranking in his first full season as a member of the 49ers.
There he would rush for a career-high 1,459 yards on the ground for 14 touchdowns, averaging 5.4 yards a carry.
The star running back also added an additional 564 yards receiving for seven touchdowns, averaging 8.4 receiving yards per reception, and earned him his third career Pro Bowl selection.
Ultimately, that saw him skyrocket up the NFL’s list to third overall in 2024.
Now he has suffered a significant slide in the rankings, McCaffrey will likely be desperate to prove that he is still just as dynamic a player as he was two seasons ago, whilst wanting to avenge the experts’ sub-par ranking of him.
If he can stay healthy for the season, there is simply no chance that there are 72 players greater than him, and the 49ers organization will be hoping the beast is unleashed once again as they prepare their bid for another deep post-season run.
