It's been nearly a decade since director Rian Johnson ventured into the Star Wars universe with his successful, albeit slightly controversial work on 2017's Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
In the interim, the world-renowned filmmaker behind Brick and Looper has been hard at work pursuing various other projects, including Peacock's critically well-received mystery series Poker Face and the similarly-veined Knives Out trilogy starring Daniel Craig.
With how busy the 51-year-old director's been over the past eight years, it's no surprise that Johnson hasn't gotten around to working on his previously announced trilogy of Star Wars films in the wake of The Last Jedi.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Johnson specifically discussed his lack of a firm commitment to his Star Wars return, citing the lack of concrete material he has for a prospective space opera trilogy.
Speaking with the magazine, Johnson said, "Nothing really happened with [his Star Wars trilogy]" following The Last Jedi's release.
“We had a great time working together, and they said, ‘Let’s keep doing it.’ I said, ‘Great!’" the director further elaborated. "The short version is Knives Out happened. I went off and made Knives Out, and was off to the races, busy making murder mysteries."
Indeed, Johnson has been turning more and more of his attention to the murder mystery genre. In 2019, he wrote and directed his Hercule Poirot-inspired whodunit, Knives Out, releasing a sequel to said film in the form of Glass Onion just three years later.
On December 12 of this year, Johnson will officially deliver the third entry in the Knives Out series with Wake Up Dead Man on Netflix.
As with its previous installments, the film will once again star the 57-year-old Daniel Craig alongside an all-star ensemble cast, including the likes of Josh Brolin, Glenn Close, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington, Josh O'Connor and Andrew Scott.
In spite of his recent creative ventures into the whodunit genre, though, Johnson has said he'd love to one day return to the Star Wars universe, so long as the timing was ideal for his career.
"It’s the sort of thing if, down the line, there’s an opportunity to do it, or do something else in Star Wars, I would be thrilled," the director said. "But right now I’m just doing my own stuff, and pretty happy.”
