Who should Jasprit Bumrah replace at Lord’s? Sunil Gavaskar makes his pick

Jasprit Bumrah is all set to return to India Playing XI for the Lord’s Test against England. In Birmingham, Akash Deep replaced Bumrah. However, with Akash Deep bagging 10 wickets in the Edgbaston Test, he has made himself undroppable. That leaves India with three options. Drop Mohd Siraj, or Prasidh or play four pacers, benching Washington Sundar. But for former India captain Sunil Gavaskar, the decision is a simple one.

Gavaskar wants India head coach Gautam Gambhir to drop Prasidh Krishna. Despite improving in his bowling, Prasidh was once again expensive in the first innings at Edgbaston. He went at 5.53 without taking any wickets. In the second innings, Prasidh made significant improvement and was one of the best bowlers. However, he could only manage a wicket with Akash Deep returning with a career best 6/99.

“I think it’s clear. Prasidh Krishna has to go out because, in the first innings, he was a bit expensive. Even in Leeds, although he got a few wickets, he really didn’t look like he was going to break through,” Sunil Gavaskar said on Sports Tak.

    Who should India drop?

In Birmingham, it was a two-man show. Mohd Siraj and Akash Deep combined to bag 17 out of the possible 20 wickets. Siraj bagged a six-wicket haul in the first innings, returning with 6/70. Akash Deep followed suit in the second innings, returning with an average of 18.70 and a strike rate of 24.7.

Prasidh Krishna was the weak link in India’s bowling in the first innings once again. He could not contain runs and failed to get any wickets. In four innings of this Test series, Prasidh has bowled 62 overs for six wickets. But he has conceded runs at an economy rate of 5.33.

With no hint of a green top at Lord’s, which could have forced Team India to for four frontline pacers, India are likely to stick to the combination of three pacers and a seam bowling allrounder in Nitish Kumar Reddy. Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja. In that combination, Prasidh Krishna has to go out. An argument could be made for managing Mohd Siraj’s workload. However, he is likely to continue if fit. If he needs to manage workload, Prasidh will get another chance.

“Options are still open. Discussions are still going on. Sometimes the wicket changes colour in two days. We will take the call on whether it will be 3+1 or 3+2,” India’s vice-captain Rishabh Pant said at the pre-match press conference.
