Given where the Suns sat before dealing Kevin Durant ahead of the 2025 NBA Draft, none of Khaman Maluach, Rasheer Fleming and Koby Brea made it to Phoenix for a workout.
And while the trio has only gotten one practice on the books in Phoenix, it didn’t take Suns general manager Brian Gregory long to see the intangibles it possesses for the franchise’s newfound vision.
“We’re excited about these guys joining our team. And with one practice in right now, to be honest with you, I’m even more excited watching their competitiveness,” Gregory told reporters Monday, adding the team began extensive dives into the trio about 10 days out from the draft. “We talked multiple months ago about some things that were going to be really important to us. Finding guys that were highly competitive, finding guys that were gritty and were going to be tough and physical.
“You got three guys up here that do it. … There’s been a constant team effort of understanding what we needed to get done and these three up here are big pieces to that. They gotta grow, they gotta develop, but the best thing about these three and as good as they are, they understand they’re not good enough yet. They gotta keep getting better. It’s those daily habits that we talk about. They have it and they’re surrounded by guys who have it. I think we’re in a good position moving forward.”

Aside from continuing to push the competitiveness meter, the Suns’ latest batch of rookies each have a personal goal early on as they find their NBA bearings.
Maluach is looking to nail down how to be a pro while remaining disciplined and available for the long season ahead.
“It’s just the beginning for me,” the big man said. “So excited to be here for this new culture and this new thing we’re going to start.”
For Brea, it’s about staying in the moment and not looking too far ahead while continuing to build team chemistry.
Fleming, meanwhile, is focused on “being consistent as a person” and being there for his teammates both on and off the court.
Phoenix’s rookie trio — along with newcomers Mark Williams, Jalen Green and Dillon Brooks via trades — join a Suns team looking to rebound from a disastrous stretch across two seasons that has led to multiple head coach firings, the Durant departure and whatever is going to come of the Bradley Beal situation.
