Welcome to Day 5 of 7 of the 2026 European Swimming Championships. We will have 6 heats of women’s 50 free, 7 heats of men’s 50 breast, 5 heats of women’s 100 back, 4 heats of men’s 200 fly, 2 heats of women’s 200 IM, 2 heats of mixed 4×100 free, and 3 heats of men’s 1500 free.
Sarah Sjostrom is back, and we’re here for it. Seeking her 19th European Championship gold medal, she leads the field in the women’s 50 free with a seed time of 23.86. She proved her form earlier in the week when she won the 50 fly, but she’ll have to fend off strong competition in the sprint free from Marrit Steenbergen and Sara Curtis, who are having a tremendous meet, as well.
The men’s 50 breast is tight at the top, with any number of swimmers capable of taking the title. Ludovico Viberti (26.27) and his teammate, reigning world champion Simone Cerasuolo (26.42) are the top two seeds. We should also expect strong performances from Ivan Kozhakin, Kirill Prigoda, Melvin Imoudu, and Adam Ramsay-Peaty.
Mary-Ambre Moluh, who may or may not have broken the European record on the mixed medley when she led off with 57.99, comes in with a seed time of 58.25. Marrit Steenbergen is the only other swimmer entered with a sub-59, while Pauline Mahieu is 3rd with 59.13.
You’ll know it’s time for the 200 fly when the crowd erupts in raucous cheering, because it’s the first time this week they will see Leon Marchand swim an individual event. Marchand is the heavy favorite in this event with a seed time of 1:52.57. The race for 2nd place will feature Krzysztof Chmielewski (1:52.64) and his twin brother Michal Chmielewski (1:54.68), Alberto Razzetti, and Federico Burdisso.
On paper, Abbie Wood is the one to beat in the 200 IM; her seed time of 2:08.17 is 1.5 seconds faster than that of defending champion, Anastasia Gorbenko. Keep an eye on Roos Venotterdijk, Ellen Walshe, and Justina Kozan, the latter two of whom placed 1st and 3rd in the 400 IM.
Sven Schwarz brings the top time (14:35.69) in the men’s 1500, but Oliver Klemet (14:39.03) and Johannes Liebmann (14:39.67) are not far behind. Liebmann won gold in the 800 free, while Schwarz took home the silver. Zalan Sarkany, the bronze medalist, can’t be counted out here, nor can Daniel Wiffen, who won a bronze medal in this event at the 2024 Olympics.

She was followed by Anna Vlachou of Greece with a 25.49 in heat 2. Sofia Astedt of Sweden edged teammate Sara Junevik, 25.33 to 25.38, to win heat 3.
Sara Curtis of Italy clocked a 24.33 to win the first circle-seeded heat ahead of NAB’s Arina Surkova (24.75), Belgium’s Florine Gaspard (25.00), and Germany’s Julianna Bocska (25.03).
Milou van Wijk touched out teammate Marrit Steenbergen, 24.13 to 24.34, to take heat 5. Petra Senanszky from Hungary was 3rd with 24.71. France’s Mary-Ambre Moluh was a no-show in lane 3, presumably to concentrate on the 100 back later in the session.
Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom, the European Record-holder, won the final heat with 24.21, getting to the wall ahead of Poland’s Kasia Wasick (24.39) and France’s Beryl Gastaldello (24.65).

Norway’s Charlie Egeland clocked a 27.79, improving his seed time by .4, to win heat 2 ahead of Estonia’s Kristjan Reivart (27.91).
It was a photo finish in heat 3, with Denmark’s Shawn Wolf (27.58), Finland’s Julius Nyberg (27.62), and Christopher Palvadre of Estonia (27.70) coming to the wall virtually together. Subajr Biltaev of Germany went 27.48 to win heat 4. Austria’s Bernhard Reitshammer touched out NAB’s Aleksandr Zhigalov, 27.77 to 27.78, for 2nd.
Nicolo Martinenghi of Italy logged the first sub-27 in winning heat 5 with 26.65. NAB’s Ivan Kozhakin came in 2nd with 26.96, while Stepan Babenko of Ukraine was 3rd in 27.08.
Simone Cerasuolo dropped .2 from his seed time to win heat 6 with a new Italian National Record of 26.20. Half a body behind him were Ilya Shymanovich of Neutral Athletes A (26.89) and Kirill Prigoda from Neutral Athletes B (26.99).
Germany’s Melvin Imoudu edged Koen de Groot of the Netherlands, 26.84 to 26.85, in the last heat, while Ludovico Viberti of Italy was .05 back in 26.90. Because of the 2 athletes per country limit for semi-finals, Viberti is prevented from moving on.
Adam Ramsay-Peaty, who finished 5th in heat 5, placed 20th overall with 27.34.

France’s Pauline Mahieu won the first circle-seeded heat with 1:00.25, just edging Spain’s Irene Ciercoles Galve (1:00.38). Ireland’s Lottie Cullen got her hand to the wall 3rd in 1:00.63.
Marrit Steenbergen of Netherlands, swimming in her second race of the morning, blasted a 59.66 to win heat 4 by half a body length. Camila Rodrigues Rebelo of Portugal touched out Italy’s Federica Toma, 1:00.43 to 1:00.56, for 2nd.
France’s Mary-Ambre Moluh, who had dropped the 50 free earlier in the session to concentrate on this race (in which she had possibly set the European record leading of the mixed medley relay), went 59.66 to win the final heat. Maaike de Waard of Netherlands and Great Britain’s Katie Shanahan stopped the clock with matching 1:00.62 to tie for 2nd place in the heat, while Estella Tonrath of Spain was 4th in 1:00.85.
