Eastern Michigan University has said that “continued operation is financially unsustainable beyond 2027” for the school’s pool. The school has also said that unless external funding is secured, the pool will close on May 9th.
In addition, if the school cannot find an alternative facility that is NCAA compliant, the EMU women’s swim team would “likely be discontinued.” EMU cut its men’s program in 2018.
The school said in an email:
“Jones Natatorium has served Eastern Michigan University for more than 40 years. Decades of exposure to a demanding pool environment have steadily worn down the facility, driving up maintenance needs and long-term costs. Unfortunately continued operation is financially unsustainable beyond 2027.
EMU evaluated available options, including renovation and replacement. Renovation would cost between $19.2 and $21.5 million and require 18–24 months of closure. Replacing the facility would cost $30–$33 million.
After careful consideration, the University must proceed with the facility’s closure next year unless external funding is secured to support the significant financial commitment required to keep the facility operational.
Given these realities, absent significant philanthropy in the interim, EMU will close Jones Natatorium on May 9, 2027. If no NCAA-compliant alternative facility can be found, the pool’s closure would mean that EMU’s women’s swimming and diving program would likely be discontinued after next season. Nonetheless, the facility will remain operational until May 9 to allow for a full competitive season.
We recognize the impact this decision will have on our student-athletes, coaches, and community partners. We will work closely with campus and community partners that rely on the natatorium to support their programming.”
The school notably has done numerous renovations to the pool over recent years. Since COVID-19, the school has renovated the locker rooms, roof, and repainted the building to the Natatorium.
Jones Natatorium is home to Club Wolverine, one of the top USA Swimming clubs in Michigan. Club Wolverine’s younger age group programs swim out of EMU as the Ann Arbor High School pools are home to high school swim and dive and water polo programs.
The pool is also home to many high level Michigan club and high school meets throughout the year. The pool was home to the 2025 Michigan Ultra (State Championship) Meet and also hosted the 2026 MHSAA Boys D2 State Championships. Jones Natatorium is scheduled to host the 2027 NAIA Championships in March.
