Two-time Ballon d’Or winner admitted to hospital days before Women’s Euro 2025

Aitana Bonmati is being treated in hospital for viral meningitis ahead of the Women’s Euros.

The Spain midfielder missed her side’s final warm-up match against Japan on Friday.

Goals from Claudia Pina, Vicky Lopez and Athena del Castillo secured a comfortable win in Leganes.

Bonmati posted a photo of herself watching the 3-1 victory from her hospital bed on social media.

The reigning World Cup winners begin their campaign against Portugal in Bern on Thursday.

Spain boss Montse Tome is currently unsure whether Bonmati will be available for their opener.

Speaking after the win over Japan, she explained: “Initially all the tests came back fine but the last one confirmed she has viral meningitis.

“The word is scary but the doctor tells me it’s under control. She will remain hospitalised; we don’t know the timeline of her recovery.

“She’s an extremely important player for us and we will wait for her, no matter what, as long as we have to.”

The Barcelona star missed training on Thursday before being taken to hospital in Madrid the following day.

Bonmati has won 76 caps for Spain, scoring 30 goals across those appearances.

The 27-year-old was part of the side which beat England in the World Cup final two years ago.

She was named the tournament’s best player before winning the Ballon d’Or in each of the last two years.

Spain followed up their World Cup triumph by clinching the Nations League last February.

Spain will be aiming for more success in Switzerland this month in a competition they have yet to win.

Their best performance in the Euros is the semi-finals, although they have not reached that stage since 1997.

Following their match against Portugal, La Roja will take on Belgium and Italy in the group stage.

However, a rematch of the World Cup final against the Lionesses cannot take place any earlier than the last four.

Sarina Wiegman’s side begin their campaign in Zurich on July 5 against France live on talkSPORT.

England will then face the Netherlands and Wales to complete group D.
