Ridiculous Lionel Messi record emerges as Inter Miami make history at Club World Cup

Lionel Messi helped Inter Miami create MLS history on his 38th birthday as his side sealed their place in the last-16 of the Club World Cup.

The Herons drew 2-2 with Palmeiras in their third and final Group A match to finish second behind the Brazilian outfit with five points.

Goals from Tadeo Allende and Luis Suarez put Inter 2-0 up and on course for top spot, before Palmeiras forced a dramatic comeback in the closing ten minutes thanks to strikes from Paulinho and Mauricio.

In qualifying for the next round of the Club World Cup, Miami have become the first American team to reach the play-offs of the revamped competition.

Their MLS rivals in Los Angeles FC and Seattle Sounders are both sitting bottom of their respective groups.

Seattle Sounders boast the unwanted record of being the first team to suffer defeat in each of their three group fixtures.

And LAFC are on course to equal it having lost twice, with Miami the only MLS club to not only register a single point, but to also claim victory in the tournament.

As a result of Miami securing their spot in the next round, Messi has extended his stunning 100 per cent record.

He has now advanced out of all 33 group stages he has appeared in over his career for both club and country.

At Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, he helped his sides qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League on each occasion.

And likewise for the Argentina national team – doing so at the World Cup and Copa America.

As fate would have it, he will now be testing himself against tournament favourites PSG for a place in the quarter-final.

Had Miami held on for the three points, they would have come up against Palmeiras’ Brazilian rivals Botafogo after they finished second in Group B.

However, they will now face European champions PSG, who finished above Botafogo on goal difference.

Messi scored 32 goals in 75 games for Les Parisiens during his two-year spell between 2021-2023, before he made the move to America.

Once adored by PSG fans, he will be looking to break their hearts when the two teams take to the pitch on Sunday.

It will also see Messi and his ex-Barcelona teammates Suarez, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets take on their former boss Luis Enrique, who will be in the opposing dugout.

Speaking of Enrique’s PSG side, Alba said: “We’re talking about the champions of Europe.

“We know many of their players and their coach, who I was lucky enough to have coach me, and I’ve always said he is the best in the world.

“I will connect with good friends there but once the game starts, we will compete, try to beat them, and why can’t we do it? This is football.”

For Miami boss Javier Mascherano, he knows PSG aren’t unbeatable as they have already tasted defeat against Botafogo in the group stage.

Commenting on the upcoming match-up, the ex-Liverpool midfielder said: “We’ll take it seriously.

“And we’ll try to play a great game to see what our chances are.

“Anything can happen in a soccer game and maybe Sunday will be our day. Sometimes that happens.”
