Carlos Cuesta ‘leaving Arsenal’ to become Serie A manager and break 21st-century record

Arsenal’s assistant coach Carlos Cuesta is set to leave the club to become head coach of Parma, according to reports.

The 29-year-old is expected to depart after five years in north London under Mikel Arteta, with talks between the Gunners and the Serie A side reportedly in the final stages.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Italian outfit are now just awaiting the green light from Arsenal to appoint Cuesta.

If the deal is completed, he will replace Cristian Chivu as Parma head coach, after the 44-year-old succeeded Simone Inzaghi at Inter Milan earlier this month.

And the move would see Cuesta make Serie A history, as he prepares to take the reigns at a top-flight club before turning 30.

In fact, the appointment would officially make the Spanish tactician the youngest head coach in the Italian league this century.

At 29 years, 10 months and 20 days, Cuesta would trail only Elio Loschi, who took over at Triestina in 1939 at the age of 29 years, nine months and 20 days old.

His departure would represent a huge blow to Arteta, having been a key member of his backroom staff that have helped reestablish the Arsenal as title contenders in recent years.

Cuesta joined the Spaniard’s coaching staff in August 2020, following stints at Atletico Madrid and Juventus as a youth team manager.

With Arteta succeeding Unai Emery as head coach eight months previously in December 2019, Cuesta was one of the first recruits to a now well established coaching team.

The core of the current coaching group – which also includes set-piece coach Nico Jover, Albert Stuivenberg, Inaki Cana – have been together since 2021.

This would therefore make Cuesta the first of Arteta’s assistants to leave his post voluntarily.

And his likely departure couldn’t come at a worse time, with the Gunners set for what many consider a make-or-break season for their manager, who is under mounting pressure to lift a major trophy.

If Arteta and his coaching team are to achieve this, they will first have to get through a brutal start to the Premier League season.

The recently-released fixtures list revealed a tricky opening six games for the Gunners, who will get their campaign underway with an away trip to Old Trafford against Manchester United on August 17.

This is then followed up by home clash with Leeds, with away trips to Liverpool and Newcastle sandwiched in between welcoming Nottingham Forest and Manchester City to the Emirates.

As for Cuesta, he will be tasked with transforming Parma’s fortunes after a tough 2024/25 season.

The former big hitters finished 16th in Serie A last term, just five points above the relegation zone.

And those that know Cuesta will have full faith in his ability to turn things around, with former Arsenal captain Granit Xhaka previously tipping him for a bright future as a manager.

The midfielder told The Athletic in 2024: “I am sure that one day he (Cuesta) will be a manager for a big, big, big club.

“I say this because he knows what he wants, he has clear ideas, and he has clear goals that he wants to achieve. I am certain that one day we will see him on the touchline as a manager.”
