‘70s Actress From Award-Winning TV Show Is Nearly Unrecognizable on Rare Outing

Did you watch The Waltons growing up? Judy Norton, who portrayed Mary Ellen Walton on the hit series from 1972 to 1981, was recently spotted on a rare outing in Los Angeles.

Norton, 67, appeared nearly unrecognizable as her sunglasses shielded her face. However, the former Playboy model was dressed fashionably in a belted sundress paired with wedges, per photos obtained by Daily Mail.

When The Waltons ended after nine seasons, Norton reprised her role as Mary Ellen in the reunion movies through the 1980s and 1990s. Eventually, she transitioned into theater, as well as working as a writer and director.

The Waltons also starred Richard Thomas as John-Boy, Michael Learned as Olivia Walton, Ralph Waite as John Walton Sr., Ellen Corby as Grandma Esther Walton, and Will Geer as Grandpa Zebulon Walton.

The show is about a close-knit family living in rural Virginia during the Great Depression and World War II, navigating life’s hardships with love and resilience.

Although the series went on to win an Emmy award for Outstanding Drama Series, it took viewers some time to come around to the idea.

“It took the whole season to find our audience and get them onboard. People then loved it and stayed loyal for nine years. In today’s world, a show might get maybe 3-6 episodes to test it,” Norton told Fox News in a 2018 interview.

"And it’s even harder now because there’s so much competition today. A show could be gone before you even knew it existed,” she continued. “So we were in a very fortunate time in television where we were given that opportunity to stick around long enough for an audience to find us.”

While it’s been decades since The Waltons aired, the show stands the test of time.

"I was really proud, and we all were, to be representing something for families … It’s really an honor when you’re creating a fictional show that changes people’s lives. That’s what I love about this industry,” Norton mused. “There’s always potential to do that to influence people’s lives. I always felt a sense of responsibility to try to make that a positive experience.”
