CHILI, N.Y. — Multiple fire departments in and around Rochester honored the lives lost on 9/11 on Friday.
The Chili Fire Department held a remembrance ceremony at its headquarters on Chili Avenue. 343 firefighters lost their lives 25 years ago, and tens of thousands more died that day and in the years to follow due to 9/11-related illnesses.
Chili’s fire chief says the first responders that went up in those towers that day didn’t consider themselves heroes — just regular people trying to be of service.
“All of us here, we’re all volunteers, we’re just community members trying to help other community members, just people helping people. And I think that’s what any of the first responders who were working there had the same thing in mind. They’re just people helping people and just being good Americans,” Fire Chief Michael Lopez said.
The centerpiece of the ceremony was an 18-foot-long beam sourced from the World Trade Center’s North Tower. The beam is open to the public year-round.
