As the wife to a disabled Navy combat veteran and proud supporter of the United States Armed Forces, I understand the responsibility and honor of serving to protect civilians. Our military and law enforcement must never be used to abuse power or to instill fear in the communities they are sworn to serve.

I am deeply alarmed by the constitutional crisis unfolding in Los Angeles, where Donald Trump’s authoritarian-style immigration raids are targeting immigrant families and spreading fear. These actions are harmful, unnecessary, and directly undermine the values of justice and humanity that we must uphold.

The alarming detention of U.S. Senator Alex Padilla for simply attempting to ask a question at a press conference further underscores the dangerous erosion of democratic norms we are witnessing.

We need thoughtful, compassionate immigration reform, not militarized raids and political grandstanding. These tactics must stop. People deserve due process, dignity, and safety — not to be treated like enemies in their own neighborhoods.

As a San Diegan, I am especially concerned given our proximity to Los Angeles. I respectfully ask for reassurance from the San Diego Police Department that they will stand with our communities, not against them, should similar actions be attempted here. We need to know that our local law enforcement is committed to building trust, protecting civil rights, and ensuring the safety of all residents — not enabling federal overreach or intimidation.

Our tax dollars should be directed toward education, housing, healthcare, and infrastructure, not toward targeting hardworking families trying to build a better life.

To San Diegans, I will stand with you to protect our values, our rights, and each other. We are a city of neighbors, not fear.
