While every runner who steps over the Chicago Bank of America Marathon finish line this weekend will be awarded a medal, some are lacing up to complete their final task in a side quest that earns its own special medal: the Chicago Distance Series.
Most people consider running a marathon to be a lifetime achievement in itself, but for some Chicago runners it doesn’t quite fully scratch the competitive itch.
For those that want to take the 26.2 miles a step farther, the Chicago Distance Series presents a new challenge: running the three Bank of America races hosted in the city throughout the year.
Made up of the Shamrock Shuffle 8K Run, Chicago 13.1 half marathon and the Chicago Marathon, any runner who completes all three in one year will earn themselves guaranteed entry into the 2027 Bank of America Chicago Marathon and a Chicago Distance Series medal that they can collect at the end of this year’s marathon race.
“The three unique races span the outdoor running season and celebrate the vibrant and diverse nature of our local and global running communities,” an informational page on the Chicago Marathon website for the Distance Series says.
The 2026 Bank of America Chicago Marathon is set to step off on Sunday, Oct. 11.
