Roy Rossello is a pastor these days. He also dropped 47 pounds to get back onstage with Menudo.

The Puerto Rican boy band, where Ricky Martin got his start, kicks off its 50th Anniversary Tour on Saturday, Oct. 10, at YouTube Theater in Inglewood, California. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8, per the venue’s listing.

The band announced its arrival on Thursday. “Los Angeles! We have arrived,” the group wrote on Instagram.

‘It Was Like The Beatles Effect’

Sergio Blass still remembers what the peak felt like. “Girls would go crazy,” he said in a new interview. “It was like The Beatles effect.”

Some fans got a little too close. Rubén Gómez said fans once hid behind the curtains in their room for hours, waiting for the band to fall asleep so they could snap a picture.

“We woke up once in the middle of the night with flashes of light and we’re like, ‘What is that?'” he said.

Rossello Was on ‘The Love Boat’ With Ricky Martin

Rossello was in the band from 1983 to 1986, according to the tour’s official site, and his run overlapped with Martin’s. A 1984 photo shows the two of them with Draco Rosa and other bandmates on the set of a New York music show.

Rossello also turned up in an episode of The Love Boat. “I was with Ricky Martin, Robbie Draco, other members, too. And it was very fun,” he said.

    Who’s Back for the Reunion

Martin isn’t in the lineup. The returning members are René Farrait, Rossello, Raymond Acevedo, Blass, Ralphy Rodríguez, Gómez and Robert Avellanet, and together they cover Menudo from 1979 to 1991.

The tour’s site bills it as the first official reunion under the Menudo name. That’s a lot of history to pick from, since the group swapped out members as they got older and more than 40 performers have come through it.

Getting back into stage shape took work. “Two months in Miami, you know, day in and day out, doing four or five hours a day of rehearsal and weights and all that stuff,” Acevedo said.

Farrait is the one his bandmates call “The Godfather.” He sings “Súbete a Mi Moto,” which Avellanet called “Menudo’s most popular song.”

    Menudo 50th Anniversary Tour Dates

After Inglewood, the tour heads to:

Oct. 23: Rosemont Theatre, Rosemont, Illinois Nov. 7: United Palace Theatre, New York City Nov. 28: Metropolitan Theatre, Mexico City Dec. 4: Hard Rock Live, Hollywood, Florida Dec. 12: Coca-Cola Music Hall, San Juan, Puerto Rico

Tickets are on sale now through the tour’s site, which is also asking fans to send in videos of themselves singing “Claridad” to “be part of the show.”

“It’s the playlist of our lives,” Blass said, “and we’re going to be singing songs from 1977 to 1991.”
