Scarlett Johansson is stepping into one of Hollywood‘s most terrifying franchises, and the first footage suggests she’s in for a nightmare.
Universal unveiled the first trailer for The Exorcist: Martyrs on Friday, October 9, giving horror fans their first look at writer-director Mike Flanagan’s new take on the franchise that began with the legendary 1973 film.
This time, Johansson isn’t playing someone possessed by a demon. Instead, she stars as Julie Miller, an NYPD homicide detective investigating a mysterious murderer known as Father Sunday, played by John Leguizamo.
But what begins as a murder investigation takes a sinister turn when a new series of killings threatens Miller’s 12-year-old son, played by Jacobi Jupe.
The film also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as a priest, setting the stage for a story that combines a police investigation with the supernatural horror that made The Exorcist famous.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the new movie is being described as a “radical new vision” of the iconic horror property.
And there’s plenty riding on its success.
The franchise seems to have a curse of its own. Universal previously attempted to revive it with 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer, which brought back original star Ellen Burstyn. However, the movie received poor reviews and earned approximately $137 million worldwide, falling short of expectations for a planned trilogy.
Its intended sequel, The Exorcist: Deceiver, was subsequently canceled.
Now the studio is turning to Flanagan, whose horror credentials include Doctor Sleep, Midnight Mass and The Fall of the House of Usher, to give the franchise another chance.
For Johansson, the project marks a notable move into supernatural horror, with a character whose investigation becomes deeply personal when her own child is put in danger.
Halloween might have been the perfect time to unleash this nightmare, but fans will have to wait a little longer to see how it all unfolds.
The Exorcist: Martyrs is scheduled to arrive in theaters on March 12, 2027.
