Monroe County to launch new voting machines at early voting for primary election

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Early voting for the primary election in Monroe County begins Saturday, June 14. Voters will experience a new electronic voting system, making Monroe County the only one in the state using this technology.

Voters will receive a blank white card with a barcode at check-in, which identifies their voting district. After inserting the card into the machine, voters can choose their preferred language and make selections. Write-in candidates are still an option. Voters can change their selections before finalizing their ballot. The process is designed to be quick, with an expected time of 90 seconds.

“There are more machines so even if there is a voter on a single machine that’s taking a little bit longer, there’s more machines for everyone else, to take advantage of,” said Peter Elder, Republican election commissioner. “So we don’t anticipate there being any lines or any issues with regards to that.”

The new machines are expected to save the county about $250,000 each election year by reducing the need to print ballots for every voter, officials said. The county ordered 1,000 of the new machines at about $12,000 each, totaling $12 million from the capital improvement plan.

The primary election will determine candidates for the general election in November, including races for county legislature, city school board, and the Democratic primary for Rochester mayor.

You can find the primary candidate candidates here.

Voters may have received mail from the Board of Elections detailing their registration status, polling site, and voting information. The new machines are not connected to the internet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth, ensuring security against hacking.

“There is always a healthy number of questions that come up regarding the integrity of all voting machines,” an official said. “We are confident that these machines do exactly what they’re intended to do.”

There will be staff available to help voters if they encounter any issues at the polls. It’s not too late to register to vote or apply to vote by mail, but the deadline is this Saturday. Early voting runs from June 14 through June 22. Election Day is June 24.
