ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Two members of Congress, one from each side of the aisle, have very different opinions on the ICE raids and immigration enforcements happening across the country.
“The immigration system is broken,” says Rep. Joe Morelle, (D) 25th Congressional District. “I think the President is creating any chance he can get for armed conflict with people, particularly on the issue of immigration because he thinks that’s a winner with the American people so, this is a political response to it but it is effecting the lives of people.”
On the other side, Rep. Claudia Tenney, (R) 24th Congressional District, says “I think the president is acting right, this is unacceptable that people are violently protesting against police force, this is like defund the police on steroids, throwing rocks, putting people’s lives in danger.”
Some of the people involved in the L.A. riots say ICE agents are in plain clothes with no badges and no explanation of why they’re taking the people they’re taking. When asked if there is a better way for ICE to identify themselves, Rep. Tenney responded, “No, I don’t think so, I think they’re doing it the way they have to do to, these are criminal illegal aliens that gave us no consideration, they came across our border illegally, they came here with the intent to commit crimes under the democratic administrations and especially sanctuary city policies.”
President Trump said Tuesday if similar protests begin in other cities where ICE agents are taking people into custody, they’ll get a similar federal response.
Rep. Morelle believes people have the right to protest but draws the line at violence. “People have the right to assemble and they have the right to air their grievances in front of their government,” Morelle tells News10NBC, “so, when people protest some of the tactics used by homeland security where they are indiscriminately taking people into custody not checking whether they are citizens, we’ve seen U.S. citizens being deported and detained, people have a right to protest us having said that, protestors never have the right to physically attack police or law enforcement.”
