Known for his high-energy, distinctive performances, drummerStewart Copeland helped to define an era of rock music.
The beloved musician turns 74 on July 16 and celebrates a shining career spanning more than 50 years. Born in Alexandria, VA, Copeland began drumming at the age of 12 and was playing for school dances by the time he was a teenager. In 1975, he joined the rock band Curved Air, which was his first professional drumming gig, before founding progressive rock band The Police in 1977.
Copeland later recruited singer-bassist Sting and original guitarist Henry Padovani, who was later replaced by Andy Summers. The band released the debut single "Fall Out" in May 1977, which failed to chart upon its initial release, but peaked at No. 47 on the UK Singles Chart when it was reissued two years later in 1979.
It was the trio's 1983 hit, "Every Breath You Take," that launched The Police to global superstardom, achieving chart dominance in the U.S. and becoming the rockers' signature song.
Last year, the track saw a resurgence as it became one of the most-played songs on music streaming app Spotify. On Sept. 23, 2025, the song was streamed more than 2 million times in 24 hours.
In 2003, Copeland was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and was placed at No. 10 onRolling Stone's list of "100 Greatest Drummers of All Time."
Over the course of his career, Copeland has won a staggering seven Grammy Awards, both for his work as a drummer for The Police and beyond his time in the band.
Following The Police's disbandment in 1984, Copeland pivoted to composing and has scored some of the biggest titles in film and television. His most notable titles includeFrancis Ford Coppola’s 1983 teen drama noir film Rumble Fish, the 1987 crime thriller Wall Street, the 1999 teen classic rom-com She's All That, and more recently, 2015's We Are Your Friends.
"The main thing you want to do as a composer is create parts that are fun to play." he said in a 60 Minutes interview.
