Greeley City Council proclaims February as Black History Month

Greeley City Council proclaimed February as Black History Month on Tuesday, encouraging all residents to celebrate the contributions made by African Americans in the United States.

Black History Month offers an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the many achievements of African Americans in Greeley and Weld County, the city’s proclamation states.

“It is important to recognize the struggles, sacrifices and victories of the countless individuals who have paved the way for future generations,” Mayor John Gates said. “The contributions African Americans have made and continue to make are an integral and essential part of our society and community.”

Gates also said the city is fortunate to have Greeley-Evans School District 6, Aims Community College and the University of Northern Colorado be so committed to cultural excellence, an inclusive curriculum and a global perspective.

“This month is not just a celebration; it’s a vital reminder of the achievements, struggles and resilience of black individuals and communities throughout history,” Greeley West High School counselor Marlene Rich said when accepting the proclamation. “Together, we can create spaces where individuals feel valued and understood.”
