Hearing Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson speak so effusively about cornerback Kyler Gordon had me doing a double-take.

— Dan Wiederer (@danwiederer) October 2, 2026The full Ben quote:
“Man, he’s a phenomenal football player, and we have just been in a struggle — everybody’s been in a struggle — to get him out there. And so, he’s out there now. I’m more than happy to talk about anybody that’s out on the field. He’s out there right now, and you know, we’re excited about what the future could possibly hold. But it’s a matter of putting in a good day’s work every single day, stacking consecutive days up, and we’ll take it from there.
But he is a very talented player. He always has been. It’s just unfortunate since we got in the building a year and a half ago, we haven’t had him available very much. And so, we’ll work through that, and if he can help the team, he’s gonna help the team.”
MORE: Bears Defensive Coordinator Dishes On Kyler Gordon’s Return to Practice
Anyone who has been following closely knows how much of a departure this is from what Johnson had said nine days ago … back in August … or even back in July about Gordon. What a turn of events! Even though he practiced in full for each of the last three days, Gordon won’t play in Sunday’s game against the New York Jets because he is ineligible because of his status on injured reserve/PUP, but a return seems more realistic than ever.

To be clear, the Bears head coach hasn’t always spoken so highly of the oft-injured cornerback. But that may be mostly because injuries have kept Gordon off the field. Still, this feels like an encouraging development. I didn’t feel good about Gordon’s chances of playing this season when Johnson was being short (and arguably dismissive) when answering questions about the cornerback’s status. But what Johnson said on Friday gives me some optimism that Gordon could be back in the mix at some point this season.
MORE FROM PATRICK FLOWERS: Turning The Page On Kyler Gordon’s Disappointing 2025
When healthy, Kyler Gordon is a difference-maker. But since the start of the 2025 season, Gordon hasn’t been healthy enough to stay on the field. Gordon’s last healthy(ish) season came in 2024, when he played in 15 of 17 games and set career highs in total tackles (75) and tackles-for-loss (4). He didn’t come away with any interceptions, but he had 5 passes defended, 3 fumble recoveries, 2 quarterback hits, and was credited with a half sack. Stuffing the stat sheet helped Gordon land a huge contract extension in the winter of 2025. Maybe soon he will get on the field and prove that it was worth it.
CHICAGO BEARS WEEK 4 INJURY REPORT — FIVE PLAYERS RULED OUT
If Gordon returns from injured reserve, he could give Bears Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen a new playmaker to deploy as a possible agent of chaos. We’ve seen rookies Dillon Thieneman and Malik Muhammad line up in different defensive spots. The same goes for Cam Lewis, a veteran whose positional flexibility stood out in his free-agent profile. Adding someone else (Gordon) who can create more confusion with their versatility is probably what this coaching staff dreams of when game planning. Hopefully, Gordon can join the party soon.
