Rob Zastryzny Signs With the Yankees, Leaving the Cubs’ Lefty Reliever Depth Pretty Thin

The reunion that never was.

Rob Zastryzny, the Cubs’ second round pick in 2013, was an up-down part of the big league team from 2016 to 2018, and had returned this offseason on a waiver claim. Earlier this year, though, the Cubs DFA’d Zastryzny to open a 40-man spot, he cleared waivers, and then he opted for free agency.

My hope from there was that Zastryzny, 32, might sign a new minor league deal with the Cubs – pay him a little more, give him an opt-out, whatever – so that they had a little more big-league-capable lefty reliever depth, even if not on the 40-man. But it was not to be. He’s signed a minor league deal with the Yankees, and will head to Spring Training with them.

So, for now, the Cubs’ lefty reliever group looks like this:

Caleb Thielbar (big league deal, 38-year-old veteran, no options, locked in if healthy) Luke Little (40-man, returning from injury, not yet established, options remaining) Brandon Hughes (non-roster invite, minor league deal, TBD what results and health will look like) Riley Martin (non-roster invite, relief prospect, potential big league up-down future, not established)

Not a lot of depth there! To be sure, the Cubs’ rotation group skews lefty, they have a TON of righty reliever depth, and I know you don’t HAVE TO have a lefty in the bullpen. There’s no law. But it’s still ideal to have that variety available, even in the three-batter-minimum world, and it’s all the more ideal to have some depth. I can’t help but wonder if the Cubs are still considering a guy like Andrew Chafin if the market continues to be a slog.

Can’t blame Zastryzny for picking the Yankees, by the way: they currently have just one veteran lefty as a sure-fire-slated-guy for their Opening Day bullpen in Tim Hill. Pretty good shot there for him. All the best.
