Shukla revealed that Ganguly’s famous shirtless act was a planned response to England’s Andrew Flintoff, who had celebrated similarly after a series win in Mumbai. As India inched closer to victory, Ganguly urged the entire team to join in the celebration.
However, Sachin Tendulkar advised against it, emphasising the gentlemanly nature of the sport. “Don’t let the entire team do this. It’s a gentleman’s game,” Tendulkar told Shukla. Following this advice, Shukla asked Galguly to go ahead, and then only Ganguly went on with the celebration, creating a historic moment in Indian cricket and dawning a new era of of India’s aggression in cricket.
