My seven-year-old daughter’s collection of stuffed animal plush toys was already bursting out of the large bin that my wife had bought to store them. Last Saturday at the Dean Dome, when the same youngster requested a teddy bear dressed in a tiny Carolina jersey, I tried to redirect her towards the Dippin’ Dots store. This is generally an effective defensive strategy.
This time, she protested that she had to have something to remember her first Tar Heel men’s basketball game. I reminded her of the photos that I had just taken of her and Rameses.
“But Daddy, I want to name my new bear Cadeau!”

Well played, young baller. Not only was my favorite point guard on his way to a career-high 12 assists against the Campbell Camels, but his surname is French for gift.
After I purchased the small stuffy for a large amount of money, I also gifted my girl with a cup of Dippin’ Dots. We returned to our seats in time for the second half. The human Cadeau burst from the locker room to dominate the opening minutes, running the pick and roll to assist his teammates for dunks or score himself on driving layups. He dribbled like he had the ball on a string. He muscled his way to the rim like a real bear. After one such bucket, Cadeau threw his head back and hollered in triumph. My daughter danced in her seat and squeezed the namesake gift to her chest.
Her mother was already in bed by the time we arrived home, but that did not stop a young Tar Heel fan from showing off her new stuffy.
“Your daddy is such a softie.”
