ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The City of Rochester is preparing for a major renovation at the Rochester Animal Services Verona Street Shelter, with construction set to begin on July 6.
But before work can start, homes are needed for 49 dogs currently at the shelter. RAS is looking towards potential new fosters to help, and waiving all approved adoption fees on Friday.
News10NBC’s Tom Kowalski spoke with RAS leaders about the $2.6 million project and what the money will go toward.
“Kennels, probably to a normal person, are going to look the same. But we know that just the standard of care is going to be better by simply splitting rooms into smaller areas,” RAS Director Staci Papadoplos said.
The renovations aim to improve the lives of dogs at the shelter by reducing stress of the animals kept there.
“The addition of exterior doors is now enabling dogs to move from their housing right to the exterior of the building, instead of having to walk through the building to get everyone going through one door. So that’s a significant reduction in stress,” Papadoplos said.
“And finally, adding windows that let in natural light and dogs can actually see outside is very important,” she continued. “Animals need need to regulate their circadian rhythm, just like humans do.”
Before renovations can begin, RAS needs to find homes for their current canine residents. Thursday evening, the shelter held an information session for potential new fosters like Kiera Hudson and her daughter Sarai Porcher.
“I wasn’t ready for a full commitment to another dog, but I am willing to share my space. So I thought foster,” Hudson said.
Hudson and Porcher got their dog, Nala, from RAS. Now, they want to help another dog find a home.
“So I think it was a perfect fit to not only give her a companion to play with, but also help other shelter dogs find they’re forever home,” Hudson said.
“I think [Nala] would really benefit from having a friend to play with because she’s very hyper,” Porcher added.
Papadoplos said RAS is also continuing the search for a new veterinarian. The shelter has contracted with a veterinary recruiter who specializes in veterinary professionals.
“So we have just begun that contract. And so it is in his hands,” Papadoplos said.
Interested adopters can stop by from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, June 26th.
You can also apply to be a foster though the RAS website here.
Lollypop Farm and Greece Animal Services are also trying to open up space for more animals. Greece is offering free pet adoptions because the shelter is running out of room.
The $50 adoption fee is waived through the rest of the month and possibly longer.
