Barcelona top Atletico Madrid in win to climb second

In a thrilling match between two Spanish football giants, Barcelona emerged victorious over Atletico Madrid to climb to second place in the La Liga standings. The clash between these two powerhouse teams was highly anticipated, with both sides showcasing their skill and determination on the field.

Barcelona's attacking prowess was on full display as they dominated possession and created numerous scoring opportunities. Lionel Messi, as always, was at the heart of their success, scoring a crucial goal and providing assists for his teammates. Atletico Madrid fought valiantly but ultimately could not withstand Barcelona's relentless pressure.

Barca played what many felt was their best game of the season in the Metropolitano, and went back to Catalonia with a 3-0 win that put them second place two points clear of Girona going into the international break.

Post match, Xavi told DAZN Espana that he was "very happy" with his side's showing, as several players seemed to have been given a boost following passage to the Champions League quarterfinals midweek.

Félix opened the scoring from the middle of the area after a pass by Lewandowski in the 38th minute, becoming the first Barcelona player to score in both matches against Atletico in a single league season since Lionel Messi in 2019-20.

Lewandowski added to the lead in a breakaway after Atletico midfielder Rodrigo De Paul gave away possession with a bad pass early in the second half, and the Poland striker set up López’s header for Barcelona’s third goal in the 65th.

“Certainly it was our most complete match,” Barcelona coach Xavi Hernández said.

Atletico, who were reduced to 10 men in stoppage time following Nahuel Molina's red card, suffered their first home loss of the season to leave them fifth with 55 points, one adrift of Athletic Bilbao in the last Champions League qualifying berth.

"They were better. The second goal took us straight out of the game. Congratulations to them because they played a good game," Atletico manager Diego Simeone said.

"Nothing to complain about my players. They gave their all. Let's stay calm and push for fourth place. It will be complicated and difficult."
