First officially recognized in 1972, Father’s Day has become a celebrated tradition all across the world.
The day is often spent by going out to eat or going to local parks in order to celebrate father figures.
Tri-Cities resident Adam Haselsteiner has two young sons. This Father’s Day will be his second with both kids.
Haselsteiner said that he’s working to establish a Father’s Day routine since he’s still a relatively new dad.
Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in June. Haselsteiner said he believes taking the time to celebrate fathers is a good idea.
To honor fathers on Father's Day, Buckner Villas senior living in North Austin hosted a concert for the dads to enjoy.
"I've been really enjoying it the music here is always great the people who puts it on for us brings us a lot of good talent in so it's really enjoyable," said senior resident Tom Jackson.
The senior living community says it is crucial for their senior residents to have an active social life.
"Well, we have a very active community our men are very busy here they're very active they work out every day they go to parties and music and games, and they have visitors all the time so yea we have a wonderful community," said lifestyle director Janet Burnett.
Families were invited this weekend to celebrate their dads and some of the residents share why Father's Day is an important day for them.
As he looked around and saw the numerous dads and their families moving about and having a good ‘ol time in the hallways and outside of Concord Church, pastor Aaron Moore couldn’t help but thank the folks representing the Mark Cuban Foundation and The Heroes Foundation for putting on a splendid event.
The event is part of a year-long He’s My Hero series of activities celebrating and supporting father figures. This year’s lineup included everything from health-focused events – physical and mental health screenings, supports sessions and checkups – to grilling and culinary classes with nutritionists, chefs and dietitians.
In addition, there were financial- and career-targeted sessions which addressed personal and professional life audits, grooming, financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and wardrobe styling.
Mavs governor Mark Cuban said Trina Terrell Andrews “is the brainchild behind it all. I’m just so super proud of how the Center puts it together and the impact it has had on the community.”
The late Sonora Smart Dodd launched the celebration of dads in 1910 in her hometown of Spokane, Washington. As a result, she is the one responsible for those annual gifts that run the gamut from embarrassingly silly-looking neckties to kids’ finger paintings crafted with so much love by those tiny hands that they can bring a tear to the eye of even the most stoic father.
It’s a tradition Dodd decided to start as she sat in a Spokane church on Mother’s Day 1909, listening to a sermon about — what else? — Mother’s Day.
“And it bugged her,” Dodd’s great-granddaughter, Betsy Roddy, told The Associated Press in 2017. “She thought, ’Well, why isn’t there a Father’s Day?”
Dodd and her five younger brothers, after all, had been raised by their father after their mother died in childbirth in 1898.
