Blackhawks Making A Change In Net, More Moves Coming? ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

Everyone wants the Blackhawks to make some serious changes before their next game on Thursday night. Some even expect them to make drastic changes in the coming days. On Sunday, the first move was made.

The Blackhawks have placed goaltender Arvid Söderblom on waivers. Assuming he clears — the safest bet since taking Carolina to win and cover on Saturday night — the Blackhawks will recall a netminder from Rockford to work with Spencer Knight. The assumption is Drew Commesso will get the nod.

Söderblom has been underwhelming during his tenure with the Blackhawks. At times, the play in front of him was awful. In what appears to be his final appearance with the big club (at least for now), he was bad enough that he’ll hop an Uber to Rockford in time for practice on Monday.

Blackhawks Changes Needed

While this feels like a path-of-least-resistance step, it’s necessary. The Blackhawks need to be better in many ways. This isn’t the most glaring, but it is one area that must improve.

The buzz over the weekend after Elliotte Friedman’s comments on Saturday night that the Blackhawks are one of the more active teams on the trade market made it feel like something more significant could happen with the NHL roster soon. However, we all need to remember it takes two general managers to make a trade. And, for as consistent as the Blackhawks have been in rumors over the past few weeks, the other consistent reporting has been that there isn’t a or imminent movement out there right now.

Keep in mind the Blackhawks’ have a maxed-out NHL roster right now, so any trade being consummated would require a player leaving the NHL roster .

The Blackhawks have been linked to Washington forward Ivan Miroshnichenko frequently. He’s out of the Capitals’ rotation and has been granted permission to look around for a better opportunity. The concern here is, if the Caps aren’t in as much of a rush as the Blackhawks might be, an overpay could happen. Washington would have leverage with the Blackhawks right now they wouldn’t elsewhere because of the Hawks’ seemingly desperate situation.

One player who could be an intriguing trade target for the Blackhawks if they want to get something done this week might be veteran center Ryan McLeod in Buffalo. He was a healthy scratch against Columbus on Friday night and might be out of the lineup again Sunday. The 27-year-old veteran posted 53 and 54 points in his previous two seasons in Buffalo, but is off to a rough start this year (three points, minus-seven in 15 appearances). McLeod has two more years after this on a contract that has a $5M cap hit. He’s good in the faceoff circle and kills penalties. And the Blackhawks have done business with Buffalo recently. McLeod would have to actually be available for this to have potential to happen, though. And that’s not a certainty.

But… I’ll add there’s been chatter about the Sabres maybe being open to a reunion with Jordan Greenway?

It’s not insane. See if Chicago will keep some of the money. I’d totally think about it. They traded him to save money while they were trying to get Hellebuyck or Kane. t.co/LjnQwel2U4

Another name that’s been tossed around as either a potential trade target or offer sheet possibility (still) is Detroit Red Wings restricted free agent left-handed defenseman Simon Edvinsson. There is a fascinating discussion about some nuances to either a sign-and-trade or offer sheet here in this weekend’s edition of The PuckDrop newsletter from the good folks at PuckPedia. I highly suggest reading it.

Edvinsson, a 23-year-old defenceman with an exceptionally bright future, is ineligible to play for the remainder of the season if he’s still unsigned by 5 p.m. on December 1, per the CBA. …

If Edvinsson signs this season, the contract will carry an adjusted cap hit; the cap charge will be significantly higher in the first year compared to subsequent seasons. This is where some additional haggling and strategy could come into play.

Time is running out for Simon Edvinsson to sign a new contract in order to be eligible to play this season. A breakdown of the scenarios for Edvinsson and #LGRW as we approach the deadline in this week's PuckDrop newsletter. t.co/eTa0BIV1cu pic.twitter.com/Pm5mkisyta
