Racing in this evening’s semi-final, Kornev fired off a monster performance of 50.23 to get to the wall first and claim the top seed for tomorrow’s main event.
The next closest swimmer was represented by Ivan Girev, who posted 52.07, nearly two seconds back, while Mikhail Shcherbakov was immediately behind in 52.13.
As for Kornev, his 50.23 outing sliced .03 off the former Russian national record that retired Olympian Vlad Morozov put on the books twice. He first registered the time in September 2018 before remarkably matching the result two months later that same year.
Entering this competition, 22-year-old Kornev’s lifetime best in the SCM 100 IM rested at the 51.23 notched at the Vladimir Salnikov last December, which means he obliterated that former mark en route to dipping beneath the 51-second barrier for the first time in his career.
