Philip Rivers is on the cusp of becoming the next NFL legend to try his hand at coaching in college.
According to multiple reports, North Carolina State University is working on a deal that would make Rivers the school’s next football coach.
This has the potential to be a fun college football storyline:

— On3 (@On3) November 8, 2026It Sounds Like Philip Rivers Will Coach His Alma Mater
When (if?) it becomes officially official, Philip Rivers will get a chance to coach at his alma mater. That could be fun. Rivers played four seasons at NC State, racking up 13,484 passing yards and 95 touchdown throws during his college career. He left the school after leading the Wolfpack to four bowl games, breaking seemingly every passing record at the school and in the ACC, and finishing seventh in the Heisman vote in his final season in school.
After leaving NC State, Rivers went on to the NFL and had a Hall of Fame-worthy career with the San Diego (and Los Angeles) Chargers and Indianapolis Colts. Rivers finished with 425 passing touchdowns, 63,984 passing yards, and 12 playoff appearances in 18 seasons as a pro. You might recall Rivers coming out of retirement and returning to the Colts in 2025 after a four-year absence. It wasn’t pretty, but it was a fun sideshow to follow.

NBA star Patrick Ewing coaching at Georgetown comes to mind as an example of it not working out. But at least Rivers has coaching experience, having done so at the high school level. It’ll be a very different animal doing it in the NCAA. But for whatever it’s worth, Rivers did interview with the Buffalo Bills when their head-coaching position opened last January. He didn’t land that gig, but it looks like he’ll get to prove his coaching chops in the college ranks.
I wonder where this news leaves Dave Doeren, the coach Rivers replaces at North Carolina State. Doeren has an overall head-coaching record of 121-77 and 5-6 in bowl games. Would Doeren return to Northern Illinois University? The Huskies could use a full-time coach. Perhaps turning back to Doeren makes sense now that the team plays its football in the Mountain West and not the MAC.
