ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A local man’s dashcam captured a hit-and-run on I-490 West, leading to a surprising twist when the driver showed up at his workplace for a job interview ten days later.

Grafton Wilkins said his dashboard camera caught the moment a black Honda hit the side of his car as he was getting onto I-490 West two weeks ago. He said he has used a dashcam ever since a crash at age 16 left his word against another driver’s. Wilkins reported the incident to New York State Police, showing the dashcam footage to the trooper.

“I sent him the footage and everything that I had, and that was that. And then I made my claim to the insurance, sitting there talking to insurance, they also said, ‘Hey we can’t get a hold of her like we can’t do anything till we get a hold of her,’” Wilkins said.

Wilkins said he felt frustrated but believed the situation would eventually be resolved.

A week ago, Wilkins matched the license plate from his dashcam footage to a car parked outside his place of work. He said his adrenaline was going as he took a new video, got the VIN number, and confirmed the car had damage all around.

Wilkins said the driver was at his workplace for a job interview.

“I like, I can’t—this isn’t like this isn’t real. We’re living in the matrix! Like there’s no way,” Wilkins said.

He approached his supervisor and called his insurance adjustor. He waited for the driver to conclude her interview, before introducing himself and handing her the phone. Wilkins said she appeared shocked, but took the call.

After the interaction, Wilkins said his first call was to his kids.

“He was like, ‘Guys! Guys! You are not going to believe this!’” Noah Wilkins, his son, said.

“I would like to get my car fixed. It’s not brand new, but hey, it’s new to me. I haven’t had it a year yet,” Wilkins said.

Wilkins said the story has drawn a lot of questions online, and many people are in disbelief. He posted the initial dashcam footage to multiple platforms with his account @peapantalonas, and a follow-up once he found the same car at work last week. The videos have amassed thousands of views and comments.

Wilkins said now that his insurance company has spoken with the other driver and has the dashcam footage, he is hopeful the issue will be resolved soon. Both of his kids confirmed they are determined to keep cameras in their cars.

New York State Police said they ticketed the driver and that there were no injuries as a result of the crash.
