John Leeson, the British actor best known for providing the voice for Doctor Who’s lovable companion K9 for roughly five decades, has died at the age of 83. The announcement comes from Leeson’s son, who confirmed his father’s passing on Facebook.
“I regret to announce the death of my father, John Ducker, aka John Leeson, at 3:03 p.m. today after a summer of illness. The end was peaceful,” the actor’s son Guy wrote on Facebook. He followed the announcement by adding the quote from William Shakespeare, “Good night sweet prince: And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest!”
While Leeson enjoyed a long and successful career in the entertainment industry, he is perhaps most fondly remembered his voice role as K9, the robot dog companion who appeared throughout the original Doctor Who TV series, as well as in several episode of the reboot series.
Originally, Leeson debuted as the character during Tom Baker’s historic run as the Doctor, appearing regularly from 1977 to 1981. He later reprised the character in 1983 when Peter Davison took over the role of the Doctor, as well as appearing in both 2006 and 2008 opposite David Tennant’s fan-favorite Tenth Doctor.
He also appeared as K9 in the 1981 spinoff TV movie, K-9 and Company, the sci-fi series The Sarah Jane Adventures from 2007 to 2010 and the children’s series K9 from 2009 to 2020.
Born John Ducker on March 16, 1943, Leeson attended the world-renowned Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, graduating in 1964. From there, he appeared in a mix of both stage and TV projects, including a guest role on the hit sitcom Dad’s Army in 1969 and a regular role on the kid’s series, Rainbow.
Hearing word of Leeson’s death, Doctor Who writer and showrunner Russell T. Davies paid tribute to the actor, fondly recalling his decision to bring Leeson back as the voice of K9 in 2006. “There was no question that we’d ask John to provide the voice, and it was impossible to imagine anyone else,” Davies wrote.
