Here’s how voters in Monroe, Ontario and Wayne counties feel ahead of Election Day ...Middle East

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Early voting wrapped up Sunday in Monroe County with nearly 96,000 people casting ballots, almost double the turnout from four years ago.

News10NBC gathered a group of hand-picked voters from Monroe, Ontario and Wayne counties to answer three questions about the election:

What do you feel good about?

Anna Valeria, a Republican who lives in the town of North Chili, said she is excited to see public engagement even during tense times.

“I’m actually excited, even though this is a tense time for everyone I’m also seeing a lot of engagement from the public,” Valeria said.

Sven Vetter, a Democrat from Webster, said he feels optimistic about his party’s chances.

“I feel good about the opportunity for a blue wave materializing. I believe it will,” Vetter said. “It’ll provide for us to address as a party working family economic relief,” Vetter said.

John David Freer, a Republican from Wolcott in Wayne County, said he feels good about the candidates this election cycle.

“I’ve gotten to meet them and talk to some of them. And they’re just like you and I,” Freer said.

Gina Marie Mangiamele, a Republican from Canandaigua in Ontario County, said she is grateful for the basics.

“I have air in my lungs. I have a roof over my head. I’ve got food on the table,” Mangiamele said.

Debra Martin, a Democrat from Canandaigua, said she appreciates her community but has concerns.

“There’s a real sense of community here and I love it. But I am worried,” Martin said.

What are you concerned about?

Martin said she worries about the future of her community.

“I worry that the quality of life we’ve worked so hard to build is threatened,” Martin said.

She also expressed concern about priorities.

“Sometimes I think more attention has been paid to renaming bodies of water than dealing with a measles epidemic,” Martin said.

Mangiamele said her biggest concern is election integrity.

“Probably my biggest concern and what I worry about the most is election integrity. Making sure that citizens are the ones that are voting,” Mangiamele said.

Vetter said he is concerned about efforts to undermine trust in elections.

“The heightened effort to sow doubt and integrity of our election system,” Vetter said.

Valeria said she worries about policies that may appear helpful but could harm the community.

“I think the things I worry about the most, what I think of is, policies that come across as beneficial for the person but are really disguised as damaging to the community,” Valeria said.

What word comes to mind when you think about the future?

When asked what word comes to mind when thinking about the future, voters from both parties used the same word: Hope.

“What I feel good about is life in general,” Mangiamele said.

“What I feel good about this year is the energy surrounding the midterms,” Valeria said.

Martin said she was concerned about the direction of national politics.

“I think the policies the rhetoric of the current administration have gone too far,” Martin said.

“I’m worried about how downstate politics represents us here upstate,” said Freer.

Then we asked them for a word or phrase about the future.

“The word or phrase when it comes to thinking about the future for me is freedom and the necessity to maintain it for all of us,” Valeria said.

“When I think about the future the one word that comes to mind is potential,” Vetter said. “Better wages and benefits for the average working American.”

“But the one word I think about when I think about the future is hope,” Martin said. “And despite all these misgivings that I’ve mentioned I do remain hopeful,” Martin said.

“When I think about the future the word that comes to mind is hope,” Freer said.

Mangiamele said her outlook depended on the outcome of the election.

“I have to preface it by saying it depends. In New York State, if Bruce Blakeman wins the election the one word I would use is prosperous or confident. But if Kathy Hochul gets another four years then I think the one word that’s going to be top of mind is ‘moving,’” Mangiamele said.
