David Letterman and Matt Damon’s Blink-and-You’ll-Miss-It ‘Gilded Age’ Cameos Have Fans Doing a Double Take ...Saudi Arabia

The Gilded Age Season 4 premiere delivered plenty of drama, but two unexpected background faces have fans talking. David Letterman and Matt Damon made blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearances in the HBO period drama, and viewers are still trying to wrap their heads around the surprise cameos.

The two stars appear about eight minutes into the premiere, silently crossing the street as the camera pans toward George Russell’s home. The six-second scene features Letterman and Damon dressed as gentlemen in 19th-century New York, with neither actor uttering a word.

Fans took to social media to share their reactions after spotting the famous faces.

“We knew that bearded man look familiar!” one viewer wrote, while another reacted with, “Wait wait wait wait WHAT???”

Others were equally amused by the unexpected casting. “I live for the David Letterman and Matt Damon cameos in The Gilded Age,” one fan shared on Threads, even suggesting another potential surprise appearance: Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City lurking in the background of an 1880s society ball.

Another viewer joked about Damon’s performance, writing, “Damon looking to the left for an oncoming buggy like a real actor.”

“I’m deeeead,” another commenter added, while one fan simply exclaimed, “DAVE!!!!!!!”

But how did the two stars end up as background actors on The Gilded Age?

According to Vulture, the cameo originated with Letterman’s longtime fascination with becoming an extra. The former late-night host was inspired after spotting comedian Gary Mule Deer in Woody Allen’s 1977 film Annie Hall. Letterman reportedly loved the idea of appearing in the background of a production without most viewers recognizing him.

The opportunity finally came together while Letterman’s Netflix series, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman, was developing an episode featuring Damon. The actor, who began his career doing background work alongside Ben Affleck, enthusiastically embraced the idea.

The production team approached The Gilded Age, and showrunner Kate Churchill helped make the cameo happen. Both actors underwent costume fittings, and Damon even needed period-appropriate facial hair after shaving his beard.

Despite their Hollywood credentials, the pair received no on-screen credit for their six-second appearance.
