Jason Mewes Reveals How a DNA Test Upended What His Mother Told Him ...Saudi Arabia

For most of his life, the man known to millions as Jay from Clerks had one answer about his father: he never knew him. Now, at 52, after a pair of DNA tests, he says even the few details his mother gave him are falling apart.

Jason Mewes told the story on the Oct. 30 episode of Hizzouse, the podcast he hosts with his best friend of nearly four decades, Kevin Smith. Mewes, born in 1974 in Highlands, N.J., has long said he never knew his father. His mother struggled with addiction and died in 2002 of AIDS-related complications.

“For years I didn’t really care, honestly,” Mewes said. Even while caring for his mother in her last years, “I realized I never asked her, like, man, just tell me who is my father.”

That changed as he approached 50. “That’s when I started getting a little interested, because at that point my kids started asking about their grandparents,” he said. Mewes and his wife, Jordan Monsanto, have two children, Logan, born in 2015, and Lucien, born in 2023.

His mother had told him his father was a man named John Stanka, and that he was Polish. Mewes believed it so completely that, on an early trip to the U.K. with Smith, he answered a passport officer’s question about his nationality with “Polish.”

Then came a 23andMe test. “Later I find out I’m not even Polish,” he said. The results showed he had “a bunch of Italian” ancestry. “Oh my god, I didn’t know I was Italian,” he recalled thinking.

Other parts of the story have also come into question. His mother said his father was married, lived in Florida and had daughters. “She didn’t want to break his marriage up, and he didn’t want to leave his family. That’s why, you know, they had an affair and he took off,” Mewes said. She also once claimed his father led a motorcycle club and went by “Ace.” Mewes now believes he blended that with memories of Scott, a boyfriend of his mother’s when he was 3 to 5. “I thought he was my real dad for years as a kid, but it wasn’t him.”

The search has been slow. Mewes added an Ancestry.com test, found a few Italian cousins and messaged them, mostly without replies. Leads keep running out. “Every clue that I start to get, he’s passed away,” he said.

He ended the episode on a cliffhanger. After a string of unanswered messages, “there’s someone we get a hit from,” he said, crediting his wife for helping him “Sherlock Holmes it.” He promised the rest in the next episode.

Mewes said he waited until he was 40 to start a family because “I didn’t want to continue the, you know, the same thing that happened with my mom.” Now his own children are the reason he is looking.
