Donal Lunny has passed away at the age of 79. The Irish folk musician played with a number of bands throughout his career including Planxty, the Bothy Band, and Moving Hearts.
Donal’s family posted a statement on Facebook to announce his passing, listing the cause as cancer. The heartbreaking brief post featured a smiling photo of Donal alongside the words: “We are heartbroken to confirm that our beloved Donal passed away peacefully this morning in Dublin following a short stay in St James’s Hospital. Thank you for helping us to remember and celebrate his immense contribution to music, to culture, and to so many people’s lives all over the world.”
The family signed off the message with some words of Gaelic: “Ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann,” which roughly translate to say “There will never be the likes of them again”.
