On Aug. 10, 1984, Los Angeles rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers released its self-titled debut album, The Red Hot Chili Peppers. The record only sold less than 20,000 units and didn’t manage to enter the coveted Billboard 200 chart.

A few months before the album dropped, the band had its first-ever television appearance on comedian Alan Thicke‘s late night talk show, Thicke of the Night. The rockers performed “True Men Don’t Kill Coyotes” and “Get Up And Jump,” with many viewers commenting on the erratic behavior.

While the band’s debut album is widely considered a flop, it didn’t stop the musicians from becoming one of the most popular rock bands of recent history. It took a little bit of time, but seven years after the release of its debut album, Red Hot Chili Peppers turned things around with the groundbreaking release of its fifth studio album, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, on Sept. 24, 1991.

The album propelled the band into global superstardom, peaking at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and spending 97 weeks on the chart. Featuring a handful of Red Hot Chili Peppers’ most beloved tracks, the record’s second single, “Under the Bridge,” hit No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and charting highly internationally.

“What that was referring to was a point in time about five years ago when I had nothing in my life, no friends or no places to live, no car or relationship with my family,” lead singer Anthony Kiedis previously said of the song’s raw and honest final verse, per Radio X.

A year after the release of Blood Sugar Sex Magik, the band took home its first ever Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance With Vocal with “Give It Away,” which was the career-defining album’s lead single. Over the course of its career, the band has gone on to win three Grammys from 12 nominations.

In 2022, Red Hot Chili Peppers scored its first No. 1 album in 15 years with the release of Unlimited Love.
