A Billy Edwards fumble in the game’s final minute proved to be the game’s deciding play as No. 1 Miami survived an upset bid from UNC to win 38-35 in Kenan Stadium Saturday night. Carolina is still searching for its first-ever win against a top-ranked team, falling to 0-12 overall.
Edwards’ fumble came just moments after he had set a new season high in passing yards, and the veteran finished the night with 341 and a career-high four touchdown passes, eclipsing the 300-yard mark for the first time this season. The Hurricanes, who were leading 31-28 at the time of the fumble, then scored a touchdown on the ensuing possession to take a two-possession lead. It was the first time either team had led by more than a touchdown.
Carolina answered the touchdown with one of its own and recovered the ensuing onside kick, but was flagged for being offsides on the play. On the second kick, UNC recovered again but was flagged for an illegal block before the ball went 10 yards. On the third kick, the Hurricanes finally executed a clean recovery to seal the game.
Saturday’s loss drops UNC to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in ACC play, and also snaps a five-game winning streak against the Hurricanes. The Tar Heels will be back in action when they visit UConn next Saturday at 12 p.m.
