The Prince Estate quietly uploaded a scorching live rendition of “Black Sweat” to YouTube this week. The footage brings viewers into the center of the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in 2007 with Prince center stage and the band locked in a funk groove.
The video serves as the primer for a holiday rollout celebrating the twentieth anniversary of the late musician’s 2006 chart-topper, 3121. The YouTube clip precedes a full theatrical run of the marathon show it was pulled from. Fans on the social media site swooned over the footage: “I hope he’s having a funky time in heaven,” wrote one fan. “My brain is totally melting from the utter funk of this performance,” gushed another. Another recalled their initial reaction to the song’s original release. “Funny I never got into that song until I heard Prince do it live. Insane how he did that all the time. He even did that with songs where I loved the recording. A restless genius who could surpass his most amazing music when performing,” the fan wrote.
Beginning Dec. 3, Prince: 3121 Las Vegas Concert hits movie screens across the United States and Canada. The limited-run engagement presents a 154-minute set restored in 4K resolution with Dolby Atmos audio. Advance tickets go on sale Nov. 11.
The footage documents an often-overlooked pocket of time for the artist. Prince released the studio album 3121 two decades ago, where the album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Instead of packing global arenas to support the hit record, he moved his entire operation into a Las Vegas casino. He customized a venue inside the Rio and dubbed it the “3121 Club.”
He held court there for months. The late-night sets became industry legend. He played Fridays and Saturdays to an intimate room, bypassing the traditional stadium circuit to enforce a strict, close-quarters party. The theatrical release captures these marathon live sessions where the setlist spanned massive pop hits, obscure cuts, and heavy stage improvisation.
Audiences can take the audio home before the movie even premieres. 3121 Las Vegas Live arrives Nov. 27 as part of Record Store Day Black Friday. The live album will hit independent record shops pressed on crystal blue triple-vinyl and standard two-CD formats.
“Twenty years later, ‘3121’ remains a classic and a reminder of an extraordinary period in Prince’s career,” L. Londell McMillan, Prince’s longtime attorney and manager, said in a statement regarding the rollout. “I was there as his counsel, and the creativity extended well beyond the album: to live concerts, house parties and events around the world. This expanded edition offers another opportunity to experience the music and spirit of that extraordinary era.”
Vocalist Támar Davis, heavily featured on the original studio release, echoed the sentiment.
“Collaborating with Prince and the talented musicians on ‘3121’ was an honor,” Davis said. “I remain grateful to have contributed my voice to this record and to have been part of such a remarkable creative experience.”
The movie screens as the anchor for a physical and digital expansion of the original studio record. On Dec. 11, the 3121 Expanded Edition drops worldwide. The physical box sets, available in 3LP/Blu-ray and 2CD/Blu-ray configurations, bundle the studio album directly with the Vegas concert film.
Ten previously unreleased recordings join the original 12-track sequence. The additions feature acoustic takes of “The Word,” “Love,” and “Te Amo Corazón.” Never-before-heard songs surface, including titles like “The Streets of Panama,” “Glass Cutter,” and “Another Girl.”
To bookend the “Black Sweat” live video, the estate also pushed the previously unheard studio track “Time of Ur Life” to streaming platforms this morning. The album is available for preorder now.
