Don Knotts Revealed What Andy Griffith Was Really Like Behind the Scenes of ‘The Andy Griffith Show’ ...Saudi Arabia

Late actors Don Knotts and Andy Griffith famously played close friends, Sheriff Andy Taylor and Deputy Barney Fife, on the beloved ’60s series, The Andy Griffith Show, which lasted eight seasons. Like their on-screen counterparts, Knotts and Griffith enjoyed each other’s company while working together.

In a 1999 interview for the American Television Foundation, Knotts, who died in 2006 at the age of 81, said he and Griffith “became friends” while filming the 1958 comedy No Time for Sergeants. In addition, Knotts said he and Griffith had instant chemistry as Barney and Sheriff Taylor.

“From the very beginning of The Andy Griffith Show, we worked hand in glove. Our timing was alike,” said Knotts.

The Three’s Company actor also said Griffith got a kick out of Barney, which added to the joy of filming the series.

“Andy found Barney funny. I think that helped too. I could see sometimes in Andy’s eyes, he was trying to keep from laughing, which would help me try to be even funnier,” continued Knotts.

Knotts also noted that Griffith, who died in 2012 at the age of 86, decided to play the role of the show’s “straight man,” to allow other actors’ comedic abilities to shine. He clarified that Griffith was very expressive when he found something funny on The Andy Griffith Show set.

“I’d say something funny to Andy. Sometimes he’d run clear across the sound stage. He’s just very demonstrative. He was fun to be around,” said Knotts, who exited The Andy Griffith Show as a main character following its fifth season.

During an interview for The Complete Pioneers of Television, Griffith discussed his decision to have Knotts as the comedic lead on The Andy Griffith Show. He said early on while filming the series, which premiered in 1960, he realized the show worked better if Sheriff Taylor was the more sensible character.

“I remember thinking somewhere, in my mind, ‘This man should play comedy. And I should play straight for him.’ I knew that the second episode, and so I kept saying after that, ‘Let’s give more to Don,’” said Griffith.
