Four men allegedly burglarized a western suburban gaming café, stealing nearly $14,000 and causing more than $100,000 in damage while armed with guns and sledgehammers, authorities said.
The DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office said a judge on Friday granted the state’s motion to detain four suspects pretrial: Keonte Adams, 20, Dajuan Johnson, 24, Kyronte McCondichie, 20 and Daryl Nesbit, 19. The four suspects, all Chicago residents, were charged with armed violence, unlawful possession of weapon – machine gun, burglary, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, criminal damage to property and aggravated fleeing and eluding.
On Thursday morning, Addison police and other DuPage County law enforcement agencies conducted an operation in response to a string of burglaries targeting gaming establishments.
Authorities said that around 4:32 a.m., officers spotted a black Dodge Durango and a white BMW, both reported stolen, traveling together on Lake Street. About five minutes later, the vehicles allegedly backed into parking spaces outside Maria’s Gaming Café, 40 E. Lake St. in Addison.
Prosecutors allege five people, four of them armed, then broke into the café using large sledgehammers and a crowbar. The group allegedly spent about two minutes inside, smashing gaming machines and stealing nearly $13,850 in cash.
As the group fled, the BMW struck spike strips, prompting its three occupants to abandon the car and get into the Durango with five others already inside. Police pursued the SUV before it was disabled by additional spike strips. The eight people then fled on foot near Van Buren and 31st Avenue in Bellwood, authorities said. Four people were eventually taken into custody.
Police said a search of the vehicle uncovered several loaded firearms, including a handgun equipped with a device that can convert it to fully automatic fire, along with burglary tools.
