Pauline Love’s return to Alabama inspired by love of Tuscaloosa ...Middle East

News by : (The Crimson White) -

When Alabama women’s basketball’s head coaching job became vacant in March, Pauline Love did not expect to return to Tuscaloosa. But once she got the job offer, the decision was a no-brainer.

Love spent the 2024-25 season on Alabama’s staff as the Crimson Tide’s recruiting coordinator and assistant coach, then spent one season as Oklahoma’s associate head coach. As she was only a year removed from her tenure at Alabama, a return to lead the program seemed unlikely.

Love’s call from Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne came while she was enjoying one of her favorite off-the-court hobbies: playing video games.

“I was playing Call of Duty, and I remember his number coming across the screen,” she told The Crimson White. “I almost didn’t take the call. Like, what is this? He’s telling me I’m not getting the job. Whatever. It’s fine.”

But Love’s low expectations were immediately turned around when Byrne told her she had his trust to lead the program. It wasn’t a hard decision for Love once the offer was on the table.

“I knew pretty quickly I was going to be in Tuscaloosa,” she said.

In fact, coming back to lead the program she was once an assistant for was a joyful reunion after she had previously found it difficult to leave the city.

“Leaving this place was very hard, just because of the relationships that I had developed a year prior — the relations that I developed with not only the team and the administration, but the community,” she added.

It isn’t unusual for an assistant coach to take a head job for the sake of a promotion. Love didn’t view her return to Alabama as merely a way of climbing up the professional ladder, though.

For her, the city of Tuscaloosa is its own draw, and its people give the Crimson Tide one of the brightest futures in the nation. The extent of Alabama fans’ support under any circumstances helped her believe in the future of Alabama women’s basketball.

“The support is just second to none. No matter the outcome of the game, they just show up,” she said. “Even a year ago or so, it was almost like they would come around, come to practice and just always show the girls support. They would bake cookies. It was almost like a family atmosphere.”

Alabama fans’ intense passion for sports is a source of pressure on the school’s athletic programs, but it also gives athletes a sense of support.

Love doesn’t view the fans as separate from Alabama’s teams. To her, the two are inseparable components of each athletic program, and she wants to show that familial unity to players when they visit.

“It was just selling Alabama and selling Tuscaloosa,” Love said. “Alabama is a brand within itself that sells itself. My job is to refresh their memory, and it’s not just about football, but talk about the community and what it would be like to have that experience as a student-athlete and have the people behind you.”

The spotlight Alabama athletics receive has been amplified by the recent success many of the school’s programs have experienced. With postseason appearances in several sports last year, including women’s basketball, Alabama fans have begun to treat success as a non-negotiable standard in every sport.

Love doesn’t back away from that expectation or feel pressured by it. In fact, she is embracing the high-level programs around her and using them as resources.

“I think it’s just exciting because now that I’m rebuilding a program, it’s like I have all these successful coaches that I can go to and say, ‘Hey, you’ve been a part of this. You’ve done this,’” she said.

In particular, Love has found a valuable resource in softball head coach Patrick Murphy, who offers the acumen and experience of a championship-winning head coach.

“He’s my guy now,” Love said. “He’s seen the good, the bad, and the ugly, so I lean on him a lot.”

While Love was ready for everything that would come with being head coach at a university with such passionate fans, her transition was made smoother by building a relationship with one of the team’s returning leaders: Ace Austin. The sophomore point guard is still a young player, but with Austin being one of only four returners to the team and a key offensive weapon, Love is ready to build the team around her.

Austin had faith that she would. In one of the most important decisions for the team’s season, she did not enter the transfer portal after the coaching change and chose to stick with the Crimson Tide, a choice she made because Love won her over.

“I had a conversation with her, and the most important part was the system and how she fit within the system,” Love said. “I just told her, ‘If you trust me, I promise I’ll put you in the best situation.’”

Love is a competitor through and through, whether she’s playing Call of Duty on her self-made PC or she’s coaching on the basketball court. But she wants her players to be known for more than just their win total.

She wants her players’ character to be the defining trait of the team.

“A team that treated everybody with respect and played hard,” she said when asked what she wants her program to become. “I think with all of that, it would be kind of a true indication of what I envision this program [becoming].”

Love will never accept less than full effort from her team, but she knows circumstances will eventually challenge them; that’s when she’ll look to her players’ response to measure the culture of the organization.

“I know what success looks like within Alabama, and sometimes it can look ugly,” she said. “But I think if we get the right group in here to have and coach them up and have those same core values of just representing Alabama the right way, I think it’ll all come itself.”
